# Calls that ring

There's no link to paste and no meeting room to find. You click Call, and your teammate's Mac rings.

## Start a call

Click Call next to a teammate. Call buttons are on:

- their row on People, the page the panel opens on (or select the row and press <Kbd>↩</Kbd>)
- their tile on Home, on the Workspace (or select the tile and press <Kbd>⌘↩</Kbd>)
- the card that opens when you point at their face
- a chat thread with them

You can also press <Kbd>⌘K</Kbd>, type Call and their name, and press Return. The Call button in team chat rings every teammate who can take a call.

When someone can't take a call, the button says why, such as Offline or In a call.

## Answer a call

An incoming call shows in the call bar at the top right of your screen: "Sam is calling", with Decline and Accept. While the Founder Hud window is in front, the ring shows in the strip at the bottom of the window instead. If others are already in the call, it says who. The ring sound plays until you answer.

Press <Kbd>⇧⌘A</Kbd> to answer or <Kbd>⇧⌘H</Kbd> to decline. Both keys work from any app while the call rings. With VoiceOver on, Founder Hud says who is calling and names the two keys.

A call rings for 30 seconds. If you don't answer, the caller sees "No answer", and you get a "Missed call from Sam" notification. While your screen is locked, a notification says "Sam is calling" and asks you to unlock to answer.

Accepting while you're in another call moves you to the new one.

## While you call

The caller's call bar shows "Calling Sam" with a timer and Cancel. <Kbd>⇧⌘H</Kbd> cancels from any app. If the call doesn't start, it says why, for example "Sam declined", "Sam is in another call" or "Call is full".

Once you're in, the call has one window. Its bar holds Mic, Camera, Share, the devices, Leave, **Add** to ring in another teammate, and **Chat**. Chat opens a sidebar with three tabs:

- **Chat**, the call's own chat
- **Transcript**, with Transcribe to turn it on
- **People**: everyone in the call, who is speaking or muted, how you reach them, **Open** and a screen button for anyone sharing, and each person's menu

The panel's header has a button for the call, and People shows "In a call with …". Both bring the call window to the front.

| Do this | Keys |
| --------------------- | -------------- |
| Mute or unmute | <Kbd>⇧⌘M</Kbd> |
| Camera on or off | <Kbd>⇧⌘O</Kbd> |
| Share or stop sharing | <Kbd>⇧⌘E</Kbd> |
| Leave the call | <Kbd>⇧⌘H</Kbd> |

Mute and Leave work from any app during a call. Camera and Share work on every page of Founder Hud. Press and hold Camera to pick a camera, or to hide the cameras and fold the call window into a strip.

You can also leave from the menu bar: right-click the icon and choose Leave call. A call ends when one person is left and nobody is ringing.

## The call window

During a call, one window keeps the call. Its top bar always shows who you're with, how long the call has run, the transcript's state while it runs ("Transcribing", "Transcript paused" or "Transcript stopped") and who is sharing, then Mic, Camera, Share, your devices and Leave, then Add and Chat. Everyone's camera fills the window under it, each tile with the person's name. In a call of two, the other person fills the window and your camera sits in its corner. Right-click a tile for that person's menu, to hide your own preview or to hide the cameras.

Chat shows how many messages you haven't read and opens the sidebar. The window grows by the sidebar, so the cameras keep their size, and closing it gives back the window it had.

With no camera on, the window is a strip: the bar alone, one row high. It grows back when a camera turns on. The fold button at the bar's right end, a click on the names, or Hide cameras folds it into the strip for the rest of the call.

The window floats over every app and Space, a full screen app too, never hides during the call, and never shows in your own screen share. It takes the keys only while you type in its chat, and gives them back to your work after. Your first call opens it at the top right. Drag its bar or a tile to move it, and any edge or corner to resize it; it remembers its place and size for the next call.

Messages and anything that needs you, such as a request to control your Mac, show as a line under the window, never over the cameras.

Trouble with a connection shows in plain words: "Reconnecting…" or "Couldn't connect to Sam" in the bar's line, and a gray tile that says "Sam is reconnecting…". See [Connection quality](/docs/connection).

A teammate's share shows in the call window, above the cameras. See [Viewing a share](/docs/viewing-a-share).

## After the call

When a call ends, it waits in your Inbox for a day, with links to its summary, transcript and chat. Founder Hud opens on the Inbox the next time you open it.

Past calls are under Calls on the Workspace, grouped by day. Each opens on its Summary: the notes, the files and links shared in it, and how each connection went. Its Transcript and Chat are next to it. See [Transcripts and notes](/docs/meeting-notes).
