# Transcripts and meeting notes

Turn on transcripts in a call, and when it ends your Mac writes notes with a summary, the decisions, the ideas nobody settled and the to-dos. Each Mac makes its own transcript, and it never goes to our servers.

## Turn on a transcript

Transcripts are off until someone turns them on. In the call window, open the sidebar with Chat, pick Transcript and click Transcribe in the empty transcript, or choose Transcribe in the sidebar's ··· menu. It turns on for the whole call, and for everyone in it the call window's bar reads Transcribing, or Transcript paused or Transcript stopped when it cannot go on; a click on it opens the transcript. Hold the pointer on it to see who turned it on and what the state means. To turn it off for everyone, choose Stop transcribing in the sidebar's ··· menu.

To start a transcript with every call you start, turn on "Start the transcript in calls I start" in Settings > Calls > Transcript and notes. It applies to calls in that team only. It turns the transcript on for everyone in the call, the button shows it the same way, and anyone can turn it off.

The first time, macOS asks for the Speech Recognition permission. The speech model may download once.

## How it works

Each Mac transcribes only its own person's microphone, on the Mac, with Apple's SpeechAnalyzer. It uses your Mac's language setting. If that language isn't supported, Founder Hud says "On-device transcription does not support" and the language.

On a direct connection, each line also goes to the others in the call, encrypted like the call, so every Mac saves the whole transcript. Lines never travel through a server. In [calls of 4 or more](/docs/larger-calls), people you reach through the media server don't get your lines.

The Transcript pill in the call window's sidebar shows the lines as they arrive.

## Notes after the call

When the call ends, your Mac writes notes from the transcript with Apple's on-device model:

- a summary
- the decisions, each with the line it came from, who said it and when. Something is a decision only when someone said it was decided or someone agreed to it
- the ideas, suggestions and wishes nobody settled, each with its line
- the to-dos, each with an owner

Notes need Apple Intelligence. If it's off, Founder Hud says "Turn on Apple Intelligence in System Settings to get call notes." A call with fewer than 10 transcript lines gets no notes.

One Mac in the call adds the to-dos to your team's to-dos, so nobody gets them twice. The summary stays on your Mac unless you turn on posting it to the call's chat in Settings > Calls > Transcript and notes, or share the notes. Each Mac writes its own notes from its own transcript, so a posted summary says whose transcript it came from. The decisions stay on your Mac unless you share the notes. Share as note turns the notes into a team note, once note sync is on in Settings > Privacy > What your team sees.

## Find them later

- **Inbox** holds the call that just ended for a day, with links to its summary, transcript and chat.
- **Calls** on the Workspace lists past calls by day. Each opens on its Summary, with the notes, then its Transcript and Chat.
- **Replay** shows a past call's transcript next to what was on the shared screen at each line. It's there on the Macs that watched the share in the call window, which save the frames.
- **Call notes** lists the notes from every call. It is a tile on the Workspace.

## Where they're stored

Everything stays in a folder on your Mac:

```text
~/Documents/Low/calls/<date> <time> <people>/
```

Each call's folder has:

| File            | What's in it                                    |
| --------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| `transcript.md` | The transcript, one line per turn |
| `notes.md`      | The summary, decisions, ideas and to-dos        |
| `keyframes/` | Still frames of a share you watched, for Replay |

`transcript.json` and `notes.json` hold the same content as data, `call.json` says when the call started and ended and who joined, and `chat.json` holds the call's chat. The transcript files are written when the call ends. While it runs, each line is added to `transcript.jsonl` as it is said. `decisions.md` at the top of `~/Documents/Low` collects the decisions from every call.

Still frames are taken at most once every 30 seconds, or when the shared screen changes a lot, and never uploaded. If the folder is in a place iCloud syncs, iCloud copies it like any other file. Founder Hud never deletes these files itself.
